The Castle and the Village
The Relais Antico Borgo di Tabiano Castello is a part of the castle and its fortification system which date back to the 11th century. The Castle and the medieval village have been classified as monuments with historical and cultural value by the Superintendence of Parma. The castle was a Pallavicino’s military fortress built for monitoring the traffic on the Francigena and for dominating the near salt mine sites. The castle built on a high rock, the village and the complex fortification system are testimony of this role. Even today is possible to admire the Watchtower (13th century) and its drawbridge which were the main access to the castle, the circular bastions (12th century) and the city walls to defend the castle and the high part of the village.
