The monument, unveiled in 1983, is dedicated to the memory of the 83 Alpine soldiers from Salsomaggiore who died in the 2nd World War. The sculpture was created by Salsomaggiore-born artist, Aldo Menoni (1928-2007). The feather, the legendary flourish that adorns the cap worn by the soldiers of the Alpine corps, and its supporting tassel, are the elements depicted in the sculpture, made from a mixture of marble chip and cement. The chamber of an obsolete cannon constitutes the sup-port axis for the feather; the tassel, arranged in layers to represent the course of history of the Alpine corps, rests directly on the ground, without a plinth.
