Salt Knights namely “Cavalieri del Sale”
A long trail of medium-high difficulty which lets you discover the valleys surrounding Salsomaggiore Terme. The route is named after the ancient salt merchants travelling to the town in order to buy salt – used for cooking and food preservation – obtained from the natural salsobromoiodic water of Salsomaggiore. Travel time: amateur 3h
The departure of this route is recommended by the free car parking in Viale del Lavoro. Head to Berenini Avenue towards the roundabout and continue uphill on Romagnosi Avenue passing the former Grand Hotel des Thèrmes and the neighborhood of the cottages in front of the Palace of Congress. Continue on the paved road that will take you out of the village to the locality Sivizzano and proceed, going up to the locality Vascelli where you will take the path that will lead you to Boffalora road, with 1 km of double track surrounded by vegetation. You will pass the motocross circuit "Predella" and bump on the road of Boffalora. Walk 5 km through the hills, evenly divided between ascent and descent that will take you to the village of Tabiano Castello, where in the last stretch you can see the ancient manor. You will see in the distance the parish church dedicated to Saints Gervasio and Protasio. Then downhill to Tabiano "City of Breath" and again to return to the village of Tabiano Castello that you will leave behind to head to the locality Colombaia and go back by road to Variatico. After a couple of km the asphalt gives way to the double track that will take you to the road of Bargone and from there to the castle of the same name with the church dedicated to the Assumption. Down to the last path surrounded by greenery, which will make you pop on the bike path of Salsomaggiore Terme. In locality Campore go out on the provincial and take the uphill road that will lead you to the trail in the direction of Costa Marenga, a couple of km of ascent to get on the hill and admire the view. Continue on asphalt and pass San Rocchino and then take the path indicated by the CAI tables (path P1). Downhill, surrounded by vegetation you will arrive in the small hamlet of Salsominore where the remains of the Ancient Salts are located. Continue for a few tens of meters and on the left a unpaved road will take you to a stretch of track off asphalt and completely immersed in the hills. Reach the small village of Scipione Castello; still a stretch between the vegetation, dirt and downhill passing near the Osteria of the Castle. Passing through Case Boselli, on the provincial, enter the road Via dei Gelsi and enter the Stirone Regional River Park. You will find refreshments in the park in the "La Bocca" rest area, fill the bottles before continuing. Proceeding on the path that runs along the course of the Stirone stream, you can face the single track among the trees of the riparian forest that will allow you to see the fossil outcrops dating back to the time of the Late Miocene (8 million years ago). At the end of the route head to SP 109 and head uphill to Case Moracchi resorts in Cangelasio. An alternation of stretches on asphalt, dirt and trails will lead you to the small town of Faieto. The last challenging climb awaits you, in the hills that once welcomed the transits of salt traders. From Faieto continue on the path to Mount Pianazzo and then again trails and asphalt to reach locality Marzano. You will meet the church of Our Lady of the Snow. The return to Salsomaggiore is downhill. Finish the excursion by returning to the starting point.
Once in the centre of Salsomaggiore, we recommend a stop at bars, ice cream parlours or clubs that offer exquisite local specialties.
