Terra de Salsis – The Pumping Station in Salsominore

The territory of Salsa is furrowed by a network of underground bromide-iodine water layers that flows at depths of between 300 and 1200 meters.

The aquifers are known and used since ancient times to extract the salt, which was obtained by evaporating the water. After 1839, thanks to the research of doctors Berzieri and Valentini, water also turns into a precious commodity with recognized healing properties, and it is necessary to extract it in large quantities for spas.

The gas, separated from the water, compressed in fire-heated boilers, is injected into the ascent system to push the water to the surface, promoting extraction. The thermal water is then separated from the other substances and passes into the settling tanks, while the gas is recovered and used for the consumption of the town and the factories.
For the modern water extraction activity, over two hundred artesian wells are built or innovated, equipped with technologically advanced pumps such as the “Canadians” and “mammouths”, both in Salsomaggiore and in the nearby towns of Centopozzi, Bargone, Tabiano and Salsominore .

A curiosity: the site where we are located was also one of the oldest and most productive oil wells of the Emilian Apennines, named, for its exceptional productivity: “Triumph well”. Between 1882 and 1884 the well was drilled up to 308 meters deep by the Marquis Guido Dalla Rosa, and initially produced up to 3750 kg of crude oil per day.
